Different is where we begin
At the College of Intercultural Communication, we are a collection of different cultures and different values—we are different people. Yet isn’t your different grounded on your worldview? We must work toward a future that broadens horizons, reduces the barriers of assumptions, and allows us to live together on the premise of different to create a sustainable tomorrow. At the College of Intercultural Communication (CIC), we focus on being “together” from the start. Together, we will discover, envision, focus, and connect leaving footholds toward a rich, new world.
Plurilingualism and Pluriculturalism
The ability to use multiple languages and understand the cultures behind them is a major advantage to live in a global society immersed in plurilingualism, pluriculturalism, and international cooperation. Our students gain a high level of competence in a second language and conversational ability in another. Japanese students hone their Japanese to develop a higher-level academic discourse ability while international students are supported to develop their Japanese over their four years of study.
Learning Together
In addition to the CIC degree-seeking international students who enter Rikkyo from their first year, we welcome international exchange students from partner universities from across the globe every semester. CIC has a diverse environment in and outside of class. Degree-seeking international students are supported by Japanese students from their first semester Academic Skills course, and exchange students are paired with a Japanese Buddy. In addition, CIC has courses, such as Cultural Exchange, where all students—Japanese, degree-seeking international, and exchange—learn about cultural differences together. For the entire four years of study at CIC, students have numerous opportunities to interact with international students.

How do you picture your future? When we strive to make our dreams come true, shape our careers, and put our mark on the world, we see just how full of diversity, complexity, and ambiguity life is, and this awareness can make us feel like there are no answers, that the future is unreadable. At CIC, we believe that intercultural communication is a necessary skill for resolving challenges such as these faced in the real world.
Through a variety of fields, at CIC you’ll learn how to work with people who think differently from you, how to understand cultural and social backgrounds which produce values different from your own, and, premised on diversity and difference, how to live together with others and create peace and prosperity. You will aim to become someone with a high level of expertise and interdisciplinary knowledge who can think and act with intercultural communication skills, utilizing the ability to go back and forth between knowledge and practice based on the view of plurilingualism and pluriculturalism.
