Interned at:
The Japan Times Ltd. Maiko Hata, Fourth-Year Student
Graduate of Morioka Third High School,
Iwate Prefecture

During my internship in my third year of university, I was involved in putting together The Japan Times ST, an English-language newspaper for students. I was tasked with everything from planning to writing articles, editing and more. I am so happy to have had the experience of seeing my articles published and widely read in a newspaper that I have read since I was in high school. I hope to continue to meet many people, have many experiences and take in different perspectives in this field in the future.

All Nippon Airways Co., Ltd.
Flight Operation Center Operation Division, Operation Support Team

Presently I work at Haneda Airport. My job is to keep aircraft on schedule by managing and adjusting flight crewmembers’ schedules while checking on mechanical situations, weather and other factors in real time. Many companies and departments work together to put each aircraft into commission, so it is crucial to understand the nature of the work of a diverse lineup of highly trained staff members. In school, I learned not to reject ways of thinking that were different from mine, but to take them in with an open mind. I feel that I use this approach in my work. The world is full of things we don’t know yet. The College of Intercultural Communication provided me with opportunities to learn some of those things. I hope that each and every one of you seizes your opportunities.

I knew I wanted to work overseas, and choosing the College of Intercultural Communication was what started me on my way. I studied abroad for a year and a half in my second and third years of university, and specialized in peace and conflict resolution and international environmental development. I spent around three weeks in each of the Balkan Peninsula, Liberia and Ghana, where I learned about conflict, reconstructing after conflict and sustainable development. I’m very glad that I was able to pursue fields of my interest so completely and freely amidst the open-minded culture of CIC. The intercultural understanding I gained from my time in CIC is extremely helpful in doing business with foreign partner corporations. I hope that each and every one of you is able to experience the diversity of cultures and values at CIC.
